James Muller - Stephen Magnusson Quartet
Saturday, November 1, 2014
Wangaratta, VIC, Australia 3677
James Muller and Stephen Magnusson are often discussed as peers: similar in age, both outstanding guitarists, co-winners of the National Jazz Awards in 2000.
Where they differ is in their approach. James is capable of subtlety and understatement, but is primarily known for his exceptional facility, his ability to play complex lines with apparent ease and unfailing accuracy, but always with technique serving musical ends. He can be an exceptionally exciting and commanding soloist.
Stephen can play fast and complex lines when he needs to but he is primarily known for his control and variation of tone, his phrasing and his use of loops and other effects to give his music an often ethereal quality.
Surprisingly, the two hadn’t previously played together when the Melbourne Jazz Co-op arranged for them to do so at Bennetts Lane in January 2012. Not surprisingly, it was a memorable gig. The two guitarists found common ground in a program of compositions by favourites like John Scofield and Pat Metheny, both complementing and inspiring each other throughout the night.
They did it again at Bennetts in April 2013, and again last January. Each gig was unforgettable. Now, fans at Wangaratta Jazz can hear them together, accompanied by Frank Di Sario (bass) and Danny Fischer (drums).
“(James) is the most exciting guitar player I’ve heard in years.” – John Scofield
“Magnusson has music in him that is simply astounding” – The Age
